What is on-line screening?
A dyslexia screener is a first stage in finding out whether a person may have dyslexia.
The screener we use for adults is called QuickScan®.
You can take the screening online if you have access to the internet.
The screening is made up of about 100 simple questions.
You will be asked what you would do in different situations or how you feel about the way you do various types of activity.
You will not be asked to solve problems. It is not a threatening 'test'.
You will be asked to click a button to select your answer to each question.
The result will not depend on how fast you answer the questions.
The answers are then put together to build a profile of your personal learning style and whether your answers show signs of possible dyslexia.
What will the results tell me?
The results will tell you:
- Whether your answers point to possible dyslexia
- If there were many signs of dyslexia, or just a few.
- What style of learning is likely to be most natural for you.
- Whether you show signs of some other difficulties, such as visual stress.
What can't the test tell me?
The screener cannot diagnose dyslexia. It may help you to decide whether or not to proceed to a full dyslexia assessment.
A definite diagnosis of dyslexia can only be made as a result of a full and formal assessment by a specialist in the field.
Occasionally, the screener may not get it quite right. If you are in any way concerned by your result, you are strongly advised to phone our Helpline on 0115 924 6888 to access further advice and support.
Is the screener suitable for me?
Although the Quickscan screener was initially designed for students in Further Education or University, it has been used very successfully for adults in a variety of settings, including Training Agencies, Prisons etc..
However you must be able to answer ‘yes’ to the following questions:
- Are you over 16 years old?
- Is English your first language?
How long will it take?
You can take as much time as you like. It normally takes between 20 and 40 minutes.
If it takes you much longer than this, perhaps you are labouring too long over the individual questions or the screener is not suitable for you.
Please ring the Helpline if you have concerns on 0115 924 6888.
The screening needs to be carried out in one sitting. It is possible to pause for a few minutes to answer the phone or get a drink, but there must not be a long break.
Will I get a printed report?
Yes - at the end of the questionnaire you will be guided to print out your own personal report.
If you login a second time, you will be able to get your report again but you cannot take the test a second time.
Are the results confidential?
Yes - you are given your own personal login which no-one else has access to.
In line with current practice, The Dyslexia Association will keep an electronic copy of your report. We will be able to access the report if you call our helpline with a question about your test results.
Confidentiality is of the utmost importance to our organisation and you can be sure that your details will not be passed on to any other party.
However, details of your name and address (but not your report) will be passed out to the funding body if you are not paying for the screening yourself.
