Help for Training Providers

If you provide Modern Apprenticeship Training, Entry to Employment Training, Workplace Training or Train to Gain support, you may have learners who have been diagnosed with dyslexia and others whose difficulties have never before been identified. You might suspect dyslexia in a trainee whose poor literacy seems surprising in contrast to excellent practical skills, or you might notice that a trainee has noticeable difficulty in one or more of the following:

  • producing a written portfolio of work.
  • understanding written material.
  • following instructions accurately and completely.
  • using basic arithmetic in the workplace.
  • improving basic literacy using teaching methods which are generally effective for trainees.

The Dyslexia Association has extensive experience of working with individual training providers and with the Nottinghamshire Training Network. Our experience of working with young people seeking to move into employment following poor achievement at school is that there is an unusually high chance of identifying dyslexia in this group.

We have long experience of screening and assessing trainees and of providing specialist individual support, enabling trainees to achieve their qualification in spite of substantial dyslexic dificulty.
A diagnosis of dyslexia can guide the trainer on the most effective ways to work with the individual. It can also provide evidence to support an application for access arrangements in assessments. In some cases, additional LSC funding can be accessed for learners with diagnosed substantial dyslexia.

We also work with trainers to improve their awareness of appropriate strategies for working with dyslexic learners. Our Assistive Technology services can show you some of the software and gadgets that can make a big difference in enabling dyslexic people to get round their difficulties in the workplace.
