Screening for Adults

A dyslexia screening test is a first stage in identifying whether a person may have dyslexia.

The Dyslexia Association provides a choice of two different dyslexia screening tests for adults:

  1. QuickScan®, an on-line dyslexia screening test
  2. LADS Plus®, a one to one dyslexia screening test, delivered by a dyslexia specialist and including an advice session. This normally takes place at our centre in Nottingham.

1. QuickScan® - on line dyslexia screener.

  • This screening test is suitable for people aged 15 and over who speak English as their first language.
  • The screening test consists of about 100 simple questions.
  • You will be asked what you would do in different situations or how you feel about the way you do various types of activity.
  • You will not be asked to solve problems. It is not a threatening 'test'.
  • You will be asked to click a button to select your answer to each question.
  • The result will not depend on how fast you answer the questions, but most people take between 20 and 40 minutes.
  • At the end of the test you will receive a computer generated report, which will highlight any possible indicators of dyslexia and identify whether or not a full and formal dyslexia assessment is recommended.

To register for Quickscan® online dyslexia screening test :

  • If the screening test is being funded by an organisation which is already a regular user of the Quickscan service, ask your organisation to email us with your details, including a contact email address. We will invoice the organisation and contact you by email as soon as posssible, within two working days.
  • Other users should call our Helpline (0115 924 6888) to arrange a Quickscan screening test. We will ask you to pay by cheque or credit transfer.
When payment has been arranged, we will send you an email with instructions to allow you to log on to the test.

2. LADS Plus ® - a personal, one to one screening test.

This screening test is delivered by a dyslexia specialist and includes an advice session which normally takes place at our centre in Nottingham.

  • This screening test is suitable for people aged 15 and over.
  • It consists of four problem solving tests, which are timed: word recognition, word construction, memory and verbal reasoning.
  • This screening test is also suitable for people who have non-standard educational backgrounds, low general ability, and/or poor English language skills.
  • The test, including the advice session, usually takes between 1 and 1½ hours.
  • At the end of the test you will receive a computer generated report, which will identify any possible indicators of dyslexia.

You will then have the opportunity to discuss in greater detail with the dyslexia specialist, the next most appropriate course of action and whether or not a full and formal dyslexia assessment is recommended.

What will the dyslexia screening tests tell you?

The results will show whether or not you are showing ‘indicators of dyslexia’ or ‘at risk of dyslexia’.

Dyslexia screening tests cannot diagnose dyslexia.

However, they may help you to decide whether or not to proceed to a full dyslexia assessment.
A definite diagnosis of dyslexia can only be made as a result of a full and formal assessment by a specialist in the field.
