Full Diagnostic Assessment
The Dyslexia Association can provide a full diagnostic assessment service tailored to your needs, whether you are in learning, in work or seeking work.
Our highly experienced dyslexia assessors are fully qualified, both as teachers and as assessors of specific learning difficulty. This means that their assessments are accepted as evidence of dyslexia if you are applying for:
- Access arrangements in exams (eg extra time, reader etc)
- Access to Work support when applying for jobs or in work
- Disabled Student Allowance in Higher Education
- etc.
An adult assessment usually takes between three and four hours. It is normally carried out in working hours.
You will work with the assessor in a private room, where confidentiality is assured. A detailed report of the results and recommendations is produced. This is generally available within 3 weeks.
What will happen in the assessment?
- The assessor will discuss your background, your previous educational experiences and your current needs.
- She will then carry out a series of tests designed to measure your performance across a range of activities.
- For a person with dyslexia, the test results are likely to identify areas of strength as well as problem areas.
- The pattern of difficulties and strengths allows the assessor to determine whether dyslexia is present, how severe it is, and what particular underlying dyslexic characteristics are particularly significant for you.
- It is then possible to make recommendations on suitable adjustments at work, appropriate access arrangements in exams and teaching methods, resources and study skills in learning.
